Metro
The metro is the hidden face of the city, its termite mound, and its digestive system. We encounter many ghosts there. It was on the New York subway, between 1938 and 1941, that photographer Walker Evans took the first series of portraits, thus helping to launch a new genre, using a camera hidden in his clothes.
The entire range of human emotions flashes across the passengers' faces: love, anger, fear, hope, pain, joy, desire, dreams, and sometimes madness. It is a universe that is both attractive and frightening, a universe of glass and steel where sunlight only penetrates the open-air sections of the tracks.
We get lost there, or drunk. Sometimes we fall in love. All languages are spoken, all melodies are heard, whether they come from an accordion bellows or the strings of a guitar, competing with the shrill screeching of the trains on the platforms.
These photos were taken in: Lille, Paris, London, New York, Madrid, Barcelona, Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Kiev, Kharkiv, Warsaw, Tokyo, and New Delhi.
